Scrappy Saturday: No Closet? No Problem!

In old homes, it is common to see REALLY LITTLE closets… if any. In this house, the rooms didn’t have any! Well, to keep costs down a bit by not adding walls and a door, we decided to use the closet maid $99 set at Home Depot here. Yeah, it isn’t the most beautiful thing in the world but it works.

Here is a before and after!

Scrappy Saturdays: What can you do with that wallpaper?!

Old houses sometimes have 2 - 4 layers of wallpaper on the walls… and then a layer or two of paint. You often see people wondering what to do - repaint or scrape?

Well, we did both here. We built some cute little shadow boxes to highlight the old… while saving money on scraping by painting the rest of the wall. Looks cute, right? We aligned it with the wall so it would be a statement. The materials : scrap wood, a nail gun and table saw… and an hour of time.

Scrappy Saturdays: A Bold Wall Color

Maybe you don’t have time or money to paint the entire apartment… but you love that Color of the Year or the newest trend? Maybe you’re still cooped up in your home, wondering when Covid-19 will be over?

Think about using the color on one statement wall. Just make sure the undertones are the same. This will save you money and time while giving you a little reset.

Can we just re-stripe Main Street for now?!

The National Street Improvements Study conducted by Portland State a university confirmed that adding bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure had either positive or non significant impacts on the local economy. That is great because so many people think it will be bad for business!

For example: When bike lanes were installed on Central Avenue in Minneapolis, retail employment increased 12.4% and had a 52.44% increase in food sales.

Main Street in Buffalo is undergoing a redesign now with the intent to start a multi phased approach reconstruction project in 2022. It’s expected to take 2 - 3 years for each phase. Do we really have to wait nearly a decade to have a safe Main Street that works for people and businesses? We could spend a tiny fraction of money to restripe this temporarily to add bicycle and car lanes in the spring and get 5 + years out of it. That way we have a safe street while it gets reconstructed. Food for thought.

Dreaming About This Handsome Fella

I spotted this handsome brick building in the Masten Park area (near Main / Utica) a week ago and cannot stop thinking about it. I guess I’ll have to inquire… brick buildings like this are hard to save because they often are so small but have environmental issues and the utilities are often in need of repair due to neglect or vacancy. That is why it is CRITICAL to not let them go vacant. Imagine the possibilities - it could be a workshop, garage, office… maybe even a mixed use building!

Westsiders: Your Rhode Island Christmas Tree Pop Up is HERE!

There is no secret that I LOVE pop up Christmas tree lots. They’re special - temporary in nature but so so magical. We always have one in the neighborhood on Rhode Island & 18th. What I love about this place is its no frills but happens to be around the corner from Remedy House & Five Points so if you’re craving a hot cocoa, you can walk the tree down the street and grab one on your way home or drink before you go pick your tree out!

If you’re looking for POTTED trees, Urban Roots has them this year, too! (This is what we do but it isn’t practical for everyone!)

Hygge

The Danes are the happiest people in the world. They have a word for cozy called “Hygge”. Hygge is defined as defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” It is about good food, being with people you love, comforting interiors and more. Hygge is life! You can read about the lifestyle here. As you’re planning the winter, the idea is to embrace the cold and make your life as cozy as possible. Being from Buffalo, we feel like Hygge should be something we all aim for.

Organizing Your Life? Try Zettelkasten!

Zettelkasten is German for “Slip box” and is an organizing note taking tool that is grabbing peoples attention.

“ This system, which is used by writers, researchers, and entrepreneurs the world over, makes it easier to document, develop, and expand on ideas. Perhaps more importantly, it also makes it easier to connect them with other ideas in new ways, thus boosting your creativity. By linking ideas together, you make room for serendipity, which can spark new, exciting thoughts. “

While this seems wild, it works. I felt like sharing it with our residents and clients could come in handy since organizing our homes and lives is part of living in a home!

You can read all about it here. There is a youtube video about this, too! You can watch it here.

Wild!
