Historic Kansas City: Keynoting the Old Home Expo!
In February, I had the absolute pleasure of traveling to Kansas City, MO to keynote their annual Old Home Expo. I had a fun time helping KCMO explore alternative ways to save buildings that are beyond the traditional campaign steps. We talked about house rehabs, what it’s like to be on TV and a whole lot of Buffalo. They all seemed to really like the heart bomb and immediately took that strategy to Nelle Peters, a group of historic apartments that they tried to save but unfortunately we’re demolished just days after the conference. What a shame!
The parallels between Buffalo and KCMO were there – a mid west city with a lot of sprawl and growth in the last half of the 20th century, beautiful historic neighborhoods and incredible parks, parkways and green landscapes, a bold art museum (hello shuttle cocks!!) and a dynamic group of community change makers that are working their butts off to do great things. The BBQ was stellar – try the “sweet heat” from Arthur Bryants when you go!
